Quality Policy

QUALITY ASSESSMENT

Raising quality standards across the English Riviera is a key objective of the adopted ‘Turning the Tide for Tourism in Torbay’ strategy and the English Riviera Tourism Company(ERTC) is passionate about raising standards through the various grading schemes and or tourism awards that help raise the awareness of the English Riviera as a leading, year round, destination.

In the past 12 months there has been a national review of quality policy undertaken by Visit England in respect of accommodation assessments, star ratings and existing policies. To date, both nationally and in many destinations, including the English Riviera, only graded accommodation providers were allowed to take part in official marketing campaigns but you should be aware that position has changed.

Following a legal and currently unresolved challenge against Visit England regarding current policy Visit England have announced that they will, where possible, work with and promote quality assessed businesses, but this will no longer be exclusively.

More information about the Visit England position can be found here:

VISITENGLAND BRIEFING NOTE ON QUALITY ASSESSMENTS May2012.doc

The ERTC work closely with Visit England and we aim to align local policy to national policy whenever possible. With this in mind the ERTC Board of Directors has made the decision to follow Visit England’s line on this matter.

This means that from 2013, any English Riviera accommodation business no longer has to be star rated to be included in the official Destination Marketing campaigns and any tourism business can now advertise their business in the official English Riviera Destination Guide and on the official Destination Web Site if they so wish.

Moving forwards local tourism accommodation businesses will now have a choice as to what, if any, quality assessments they wish to invest in including the following and we would ask that you make direct contact with the various bodies to find out more on how the different schemes can help your business.

1) A Star Rating via the National Quality Assessment Scheme (NQAS) operated by Quality in Tourism (QIT) or the AA of which the ERTC will continue to promote prominently. You can find out more about gaining a star rating through the following agencies:
